Buzzing for Change in 2026

How We’re Supporting Native Pollinators with the Wisconsin Bumble Bee Brigade

At Wisconsin Bee Company, we’re passionate about pollinators not just honey bees, but all the native species that keep our landscapes, food systems, and ecosystems flourishing. That’s why our beekeepers actively participate in the Wisconsin Bumble Bee Brigade, a statewide citizen science initiative that empowers volunteers to collect vital data on native bumble bee populations.

The Bumble Bee Brigade is a photography‑based volunteer monitoring project coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and its partners. Volunteers submit photos and observations of bumble bees they encounter in the field, helping scientists track species’ distribution, abundance, and seasonal activity. All observations even surveys where no bumble bees are seen contribute valuable scientific data.

Why This Matters for 2026

Native pollinators including bumble bees like the federally endangered rusty patched bumble bee play an essential role in Wisconsin’s ecosystems and agriculture. They pollinate wildflowers, fruits, vegetables, and other crops that humans, birds, and wildlife depend on. Yet many pollinator species are in decline due to habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and changing landscapes.

By participating in the Bumble Bee Brigade, our team supports real conservation efforts:

  • Collecting observational data that informs research and conservation strategies

  • Tracking native bumble bee populations statewide

  • Filling knowledge gaps for species where scientific data is scarce

  • Encouraging habitat creation and pollinator‑friendly gardening across communities

Citizen Science — Big Impact

Citizen science programs like the Bumble Bee Brigade show that anyone can contribute to meaningful environmental research, regardless of their background or experience. All you need is a camera (even your phone!) and curiosity. Whether your observation is planned or incidental, submitting photos helps build a database used by scientists and resource managers to guide conservation decisions.

Join Us in Making a Difference

As we move into 2026, we’re proud to stand alongside fellow volunteers across Wisconsin — from urban gardens to rural fields working together to ensure a healthier future for native pollinators. If you’re looking to make a meaningful environmental impact this year, consider joining the Bumble Bee Brigade, creating pollinator habitat, or simply learning more about the insects that make our world buzz.

🐝 Together, we’re collecting data, engaging communities, and supporting pollinators one observation at a time. Join the brigade today!
